The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Wednesday (26 July 2023) elected its first female students’ representative council (SRC) president, Yvonne Osei Adobea, in its 71 years of existence.
Adobea won 8,282 votes to beat her main contender, Abraham Rockson, who secured 4,568 votes.
Her election comes at a time when KNUST has its first female vice-chancellor, in the person of Professor Rita Akosua Dickson.
The third-year sociology student attended Serwaa Nyarko Girls’ Senior High School in the Ashanti Region.
She worked as a student activist up until her election to save the university’s Junior Common Room system from being eliminated after unrest broke out between Unity Hall and University Hall.
